Eighteen MCCL singers recently participated in the Elementary, Junior High/Middle School, and High School SATB Honor Choirs hosted by the American Choral Directors Association – Eastern Division in Providence, RI. Singers applied or auditioned for the selective ensembles last fall. After being chosen to participate through their audition, they learned musically rigorous repertoire independently before joining hundreds of other dedicated singers from the northeastern US in Providence, RI, at the end of February.
The singers worked with internationally-known choral directors Felicia Barber (High School SATB), Liana Salinas (Junior High/Middle School), and Sophia Miller (Elementary), rehearsing intensely for a total of 12-15 hours over four days. They met many of the composers of the pieces they sang and collaborated with stellar professional musicians in rehearsals and concerts. Each choir celebrated their teamwork and preparation through stunning and joy-filled performances greeted by heartfelt standing ovations.
Highlights of the ACDA Honor Choirs experience, according to MCCL singers, included:
- spending time with new and old friends
- singing fun and challenging repertoire
- and meeting composers of their pieces.
The ACDA Honor Choir was such a great opportunity for my daughter. MCCL directors helped her recognize how much music she needed learn and helped her break it down into actionable steps. Then she worked hard and accomplished it! I was so surprised to see how aware she was of her vocal control and tone as she practiced. It was fantastic to watch her grow as a musician and to see her notice her own growth through the process.”
