A Weekend of Music, Growth, and Unexpected Adventures

In late April, the Chamber Choir embarked on a journey to Rosedale Bible College in Ohio, eager to take part in a three-day choral festival that would leave a lasting impact. From the very start, anticipation and excitement filled the air. The bus ride became a meaningful prelude to the weekend ahead—filled with singing, music theory learning, devotions, quiet reflection, and engaging activities, all woven together with laughter and heartfelt conversations. Thanks to the dedication of volunteer bus drivers, Kay and Sil Martin, the group arrived safely, ready to settle into their accommodations and enjoy a welcoming taco dinner before diving into a night of connection and rehearsal.

Throughout the weekend, four high school choral groups from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Iowa joined together to create a musical community rooted in respect, learning, and shared joy. Sunday morning worship, led by Rosedale students and staff, provided an opportunity for reflection—encouraging all present to consider their thirst for Jesus and the ways their faith shapes those around them.

The festival culminated in a meaningful concert, where each choir presented its own selections before uniting for a powerful mass choir performance under the direction of guest conductor Jonathan Shoff. Whether seasoned vocalists or newcomers to choral singing, each participant embraced the challenge, delivering a performance filled with praise, lament, comfort, and hope.

I really enjoyed spending time with people I usually don’t get to talk to in rehearsals. And a highlight was standing next to singers from other choirs during rehearsals and the final concert.” – Anna S.

The highlight for me was the connection between complete strangers as we created amazing music.” – Donovan F.

The journey home held its own adventure. Despite a swift departure following the concert, an unexpected flat tire paused their travels. Thankfully, a nearby truck stop became the setting for a remarkable display of teamwork—skilled bus drivers, attentive chaperones, supportive singers, and even a helpful truck driver came together to resolve the issue, ensuring everyone could safely continue home. Though quiet reflection time was shortened, the bus remained alive with shout-outs, shared memories, and group activities, carrying the spirit of the festival all the way home.

MCCL’s singers demonstrated perseverance, curiosity, and heartfelt engagement throughout the weekend—stretching beyond their comfort zones to embrace not just the music, but the incredible sense of community around them. Witnessing young musicians from diverse backgrounds unite in support of one another, uplifting each other through their shared love for music and faith, was nothing short of inspiring. This festival was more than a gathering of voices—it was a testament to the power of music, faith, and the beauty of building something greater together. This weekend wasn’t just about singing—it was about building something greater together.

I was stretched by sitting with other people at mealtimes was surprised how kind and friendly the other choirs were. I also grew in the knowledge of how songs can reflect different types of feelings.” – Kristen B.

I grew by talking and meeting with singers from other school and even some college students. I’m not naturally a social person, but I found that once you actually engage in a conversation with someone new, it’s not as daunting.” -Elilta K.

Sitting with other choirs during mealtimes was stretching. The whole festival ended up being a very rich and rewarding experience and I made a lot of new friends.” – Bryce G.
